    What is Lakadong Latte?

    This blend is a combination of amazing ingredients that are directly and traditionally sourced from our farmers. It consists of our very own Lakadong turmeric, Cinnamon powder, Black cardamom powder and Black pepper powder.

    Lakadong Turmeric- Lakadong Turmeric is a special variety of turmeric from a place called Lakadong’, in Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. It is known for its medicinal qualities as the Curcumin content in it is between 7 to 12.32% (last tested in 2020), which is one of the highest, as against 2 to 3% in most varieties of turmeric. Curcumin in it is responsible for its bright yellowish-orange colour along with its incredible medicinal properties. This component also determines its valve. So, the higher the curcumin level the higher the value.

    Cinnamon- It is a very versatile spice and is well-known for its uses in sweet and savoury foods. It has a sweet woody fragrance which is used in every Indian household. It has a high content of essential oil known as cinnamaldehyde which contributes to its antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Another component, eugenol is responsible for its antiseptic and pain killer effects.

    Black Cardamom- It is the bigger version of the green cardamoms and is commonly known as Badi elaichi or Kali elaichi. Because of its distinct smoky aroma and flavour, black cardamom is often used as a substitute for green cardamoms. The pods have a slightly minty aroma due to its volatile content and are often used as a mouth freshener. Every Indian household uses this spice to flavour biryanis and other Indian cuisines. Along with flavour, it has also been traditionally utilized to treat various ailments.

    Black Pepper- Known as the king of spice as it is widely loved and extensively used by people all over the world. Black pepper’s signature aroma emanates from the berries of the tropical Piper nigrum vine, one among the thousand species of the Piperaceae family. Black pepper is more than just a kitchen staple but is used medicinally in ancient medicines. It has active component piperine which does all the magic! It is responsible for all the health benefits that it provides and is also an essential component that enhances curcumin absorption and activates it up to 2,000%. It works by supporting the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system.

    Note: The blend can form a slimy or sticky texture when it is mixed with a liquid.

    What is The Shelf-life of Lakadong Latte?

    Our Lakadong Latte can last for twelve months if it is properly stored. The powder does not get spoilt, but it will start to lose its potency with time and will not flavour or show its benefits as intended when it exceeds the period of twelve months.

    How to Store Lakadong Latte?

    Here is what you can do in order to keep your Lakadong Latte fresh for a longer duration.

    • Store it away from direct sunlight, stoves, ovens, and do not keep it on the top of a refrigerator because the heat emitted from them causes the blend to lose its flavour and strength.

    Why Does Lakadong Latte Form a Slimy/Sticky Texture?

    All our products have minimally processed ingredients. They are processed in-house to maintain their purity and quality. The fibrous nature of these ingredients such as turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon is the reason behind the sticky texture of the blend. Consumption of this slimy/sticky blend is absolutely fine.

    What is Mawsynram Honey?

    Natural honey that is directly collected from the dense forests of Mawsynram where the flora is in abundance. Our Mawsynram honey is provided to us by our partnered beekeeper, Kong Elvira who hails from Thieddieng village in Mawsynram.

    How Are the Bees Reared?

    The people in the village use traditional beehives to rear the bees. They make use of wooden logs called ‘Ksing’ where the bees reside. The bees are collected from the dense forests and are kept inside the ‘Ksing’ for a few months.

    The beehives are checked from time to time to ensure that they are busy and working and that the surrounding area is clean and healthy.

    Besides the traditional beehive or ‘Ksing’, boxes that are provided by the government are also used but they are not that durable so, Kong Elvira have constructed cement covers for the boxes that last them for many years.

    Why Does Pure Raw Honey Undergo Crystallization Process?

    If your honey bottle is solidified or has a creamy texture. It means you are witnessing a natural process called “Crystallization” which is perfectly normal for raw and pure honey.

    It is a natural and uncontrolled process that happens when the glucose (or sugar content) in honey loses water and takes the form of crystals which is due to change in temperature. Other kinds of honey that are available in the market undergo a heating process known as pasteurization to maintain the consistency of the honey. This method can make it stay liquified for a long period, but it reduces the nutrients in it. So, observing a sign of crystallization in your honey indicates that it is not processed and is raw.

    A simple way to decrystallize it is by keeping the jar in warm water or keeping it under the sun before its utilization.

    Phases of crystallization:

    Before the honey gets completely crystallized, there are different phases it undergoes at room temperature (20° C -22° C) which are as follows.

    • Just after its filling- The honey has a warm, smooth, and drippy consistency with a clear golden-brown colour.
    • After a week- The colour of the honey gets a little darker and its consistency becomes thick and sticky.
    • After two weeks- During the second week, the honey tends to attain a dull brown colour and becomes thick and this is when it starts crystallizing.
    • After 3 weeks- During the third week, you can actually see the signs of crystallization in your bottle. The colour of the honey becomes a lighter shade of brown with some white formation on it. The honey gets really thick with a semisolid texture.
    • After 4 weeks- You will really observe the difference during this week. The honey attains a light brown colour with some white tints. The texture becomes very thick, but you will still see some liquid in it.
    • After 6 weeks- During this phase, the honey turns into a creamy texture with an off-white colour. The consistency becomes extremely thick and it will not have a flow.
    • After 7 weeks- The honey becomes completely crystallized and will be buff coloured with a solid creamy texture. You will observe crystals like the formation of the natural sugars in it. A spoon will be needed to scoop it as this crystallized honey will not easily flow.

    How to decrystallize honey?

    To turn your crystallized honey into liquid again, a gentle heat technique is followed.

    1. Boil water in a container and remove it from heat.
    2. Place the jar of honey in it making sure the water does not reach the top of the jar.
    3. The honey slowly liquefies. Repeat the process if the honey is still solidified.
    4. The jar can also be kept under the sun until it liquefies.

    Note: It is not recommended to microwave raw honey or to put it in direct heat as this may destroy some of its essential nutrients.


    What is The Shelf-life of Honey?

    Raw honey does not have an expiry date, but the crystallization process can change the colour and taste of the honey which is a natural process that can easily be resolved.

    1. Helps in reducing inflammation- Curcumin in turmeric and cinnamon have natural anti-inflammatory compounds that help the body fight against foreign substances. Without inflammation in the body, bacteria and germs can easily take over the body and lead to chronic diseases. Therefore, whatever substance that can help in treating chronic inflammation is of utmost importance.   • These are a few recipes that we have created using our very own Lakadong Latte.

    1. Lakadong Latte with coffee:
    With or without coffee, this could be your preferred latte for your everyday life. Ingredients:

    • 2 cups milk (regular milk, coconut, or almond milk)
    • 1 teaspoon Lakadong Latte
    • 1/2 teaspoon ginger (optional- it is good for winter to keep the body warm)
    • 1 teaspoon of honey for a sweet taste
    • 1 heaping teaspoon of coffee

    Instructions:

    1. Heat Milk, ginger, and lakadong latte in a pan for a few minutes till it becomes warm
    2. Pour it into a glass and add honey
    3. To make your latte, add 1 tsp of coffee in a mug
    4. Pour the mixture into it
    5. Stir to combine and to form a smooth mixture
    6. Enjoy!

    2. Iced Lakadong Latte:

    You can have it cold as well during the summer to cool your body and freshen up your mind. Ingredients:

    • 2 cups of milk (regular milk, coconut or almond milk)
    • 1 teaspoon Lakadong Latte
    • 1/4 teaspoon of honey
    • A few ice cubes

    Instructions:

    1. Pour milk into a glass
    2. dd Lakadong Latte to it
    3. Mix well or you can even blend it in a blender
    4. Add a few ice cubes
    5. Add honey for a little sweetness
    6. It's ready to be enjoyed!

    3. Vanilla Lakadong Latte:

    Lakadong might be bitter to some users, so a mixture of pure vanilla extract would counteract the bitterness from the Lakadong. This is a nice way to enjoy it.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon honey
    • 1 teaspoon of Lakadong Latte
    • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Instructions:
    • Heat Milk and Lakadong Latte in a pan, stir well till mixture blends together
    • Remove it from the heat before it starts boiling and strain it in a cup
    • Stir the vanilla extract into the mixture
    • Add honey if you prefer some sweetness
    • Enjoy!

    The many uses of honey

    Whether you are preparing a garnish or topping a cheesecake, Zizira’s honey is a seamless compliment. Whichever way you use this honey, it will tingle your taste buds.

    Here are 10 ways you can use our honey

    1. Honey citrus syrups for soothing sore throat and cold- Mix a tablespoon of honey and half a teaspoon of lemon juice together and consume it daily for soothing sore throat and cold.
    2. Ginger honey for stomach issues- Mix a tablespoon of honey with half a teaspoon of ginger powder or ginger juice together. You can add this to your teas or consume it directly to get relief from stomach issues.
    3. Honey as a moisturizer for cracked heels- Warm two tablespoons of honey and add one tablespoon of milk to it. Gently mix it and add 1 teaspoon of orange juice/lemon juice to it. Mix it properly and apply it on the affected area massaging it for a few minutes and leaving it for 45 minutes and rinse. Do this twice a day for better results.
    4. Honey and brown sugar for dry skin- The texture of brown sugar makes it ideal for the removal of dead skin. Mix 1 teaspoon of brown sugar with a tablespoon of honey along with a few drops of olive oil/coconut oil to it. Apply this mixture on your skin and gently massage for a few minutes. Rinse it off with warm water.
    5. Honey and coconut water for sore muscles- Coconut water helps in dehydration which is the main reason for sore muscles. Adding a teaspoon of honey to it with a few drops of lemon juice will increase the effect of coconut juice and helps in overcoming dehydration.
    6. Honey and turmeric for oral ulcers- Mixing a teaspoon of honey and ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder together and applying this mixture to sore gums may help in relieving it from pain.
    7. Honey mask for oily hair- This mask incorporates an egg yolk and a tablespoon of honey. Mix them together and apply this all over your hair from roots to tips. Leave it for 1 hour and rinse it with warm water.
    8. Honey spread- Snack it from the jar and use it as a spread on bread, buns, or slices of cakes. It is an awesome pair for baking your favourite cakes substituting your sugar with it.
    9. Honey drizzle- Drizzle the honey over your favourite desserts and fruits. It will give your oatmeal that extra sweetness needed along with a whole bunch of healthy goodness.
    10. Honey as a sweetener- Add a teaspoon of honey as a natural sweetener in your favourite drinks such as juices, golden milk, coffee, or teas.
