Category: Discovering Meghalaya – A Communication Series
In this series of blog posts and infographics, Zizira’s team of explorers will take you on a journey through Meghalaya, to begin with, and then the rest of Northeast India, unravelling the hidden potential of nature given produce. Our team of explorers are on a quest to find out about the unique crops of Meghalaya and the rest of the Northeast states of India and will share their findings with you.
The team will introduce to you fruits, herbs, vegetables and other plants – not just their appearance and what they taste like, but also medicinal benefits and traditional uses, if any. You will read about Khasi Sticky Rice which we’ve found to be a great alternative to the typical rice used for Kheer. You will learn that sticky rice, which is sought after for Thai and other south Asian cooking, is grown only in Northeast India! Or you may learn about Lakadong Turmeric which is widely known for its high curcumin content and valued as a premium spice. The Box Myrtle fruits could be another surprise for you, when you discover that its sourness is an interesting alternative to lime or tamarind. Similarly, get to know about Bhut Jolokia, said to be hottest chili in the world and so on.
At the same time, you will also learn about the Northeast farmers who have been practicing traditional farming methods for generations, which are by default organic, yet are today struggling to make ends meet. These unsung heroes who are stoically upholding the traditional farming methods are being pitched against modern day farming practices which can mass produce and bring cheaper commodities to the market. This is where the Zizira explorers will step in and discover ways to help them so that they are able to practice their chosen methods in a more profitable and sustainable way.
And then of course, one hears that there are many other low volume high value produce of Northeast India. As we discover we will introduce them to you and even make them available on Zizira’s online store.
